The world is in the midst of a climate crisis and the livestock industry contributes close to 15% of all global emissions. As the world’s largest meat company, JBS claims to be serious about climate action but their track record and plans for growth tell a different story.

 JBS is the highest emitting meat and dairy company in the world, with a carbon footprint estimated to be larger than Spain’s. The company continues to drive deforestation in Brazil to expand its global business, and has made it clear that it will still accept deforestation in its supply chain for another 12 years. Since 2017, JBS has paid billions in fines for corruption, environmental harms and human rights abuses.

[/vc_column_text][vc_text_separator title=”” i_icon_fontawesome=”fas fa-exclamation-triangle” i_color=”white” i_background_style=”rounded-outline” i_background_color=”white” add_icon=”true”][vc_column_text]

The company is now proposing to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in 2023, but filings show they lack a legitimate plan for addressing climate change risk and an evolving global protein market. The NYSE listing could also reduce minority shareholder’s power and consolidate family control – despite their notorious history of corruption and legal troubles.

Banks and supermarkets that do business with the company must drop JBS now.

[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Read more about the risks of JBS listing on the NYSE ” style=”3d” size=”lg” align=”center” css_animation=”none” shadow_types=”small” hover_anim=”color” hover_anim_color=”#ffe8e8″ link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.globalwitness.org%2Fen%2Fpress-releases%2Fexperts-issue-warning-to-investors%2F||target:%20_blank|” css=”.vc_custom_1701267634447{padding-top: 20px !important;border-radius: 5px !important;}”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text el_class=”caption-txt”]© Christian Braga / Greenpeace[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_class=”padding-top-bottom dark-red-background” el_id=”who-is-responsible”][vc_column][vc_row_inner el_class=”padded-row”][vc_column_inner][vc_custom_heading text=”Who is responsible?” font_container=”tag:h2|text_align:center” use_theme_fonts=”yes” el_class=”fade-in-right”][vc_column_text]

The food, leather and financial sectors all have a role in allowing JBS to get away with its destructive business model.
JBS will eliminate all deforestation in all biomes from its supply chain by 2035.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator color=”white”][vc_column_text el_class=”reality”]

JBS originally promised to eliminate deforestation by a 2011 deadline. That’s 24 years difference. Since 2008, the total deforestation footprint of JBS has been conservatively estimated to be as high as 200,000 hectares in its direct supply chain and 1.5 million hectares in its indirect supply chain. The Amazon is already showing signs of reaching a tipping point, we can’t wait another 13 years for JBS to stop deforestation when the crisis is now.

JBS said it will monitor all of its direct suppliers by 2025 and require indirect suppliers to voluntarily report.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator color=”white”][vc_column_text el_class=”reality”]

JBS’s direct cattle suppliers only account for a small proportion of its supply chain. Relying on voluntary reporting from their vast number of indirect suppliers, across several different biomes, leaves the door wide open for continued deforestation.

JBS said it aims to eliminate illegal deforestation in Brazil by 2025 and all deforestation by 2035.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator color=”white”][vc_column_text el_class=”reality”]

All forms of deforestation contribute to the climate and biodiversity crises. However, JBS is openly admitting that it will break the law for at least the next 4 years. Nearly 90 million hectares (an area the size of Sweden) are at risk of legal deforestation in Brazil alone, where land is deforested and cleared with a permit to do so. Legislation proposed by the Bolsonaro government, currently advancing through the Brazilian Congress, also risks legalising land grabs and swathes of illegal deforestation.
